The United States has a Muslim community estimated at approximately 1.1 percent of the population per Pew Research, or roughly 3.45 million people, with the figure projected to nearly double by 2050. The community is among the most ethnically diverse Muslim populations in the world, drawn from South Asian (Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi), Arab (Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian, Iraqi, Palestinian, Yemeni, Moroccan), African American (a substantial native-born convert community with deep historical roots), Iranian, Turkish, Bosnian, Somali, Senegalese, Indonesian, Malaysian, and white American convert backgrounds. African American Muslims account for approximately 20 to 25 percent of all U.S. Muslims and have a continuous history reaching back to the enslaved West African Muslims of the colonial and antebellum periods. The Mother Mosque of America in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, opened in 1934, is the oldest purpose-built mosque in continuous use in North America. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), and the Muslim American Society are major national bodies. eSalah uses the ISNA method (Fajr/Isha 15°/15°), the prevailing North American convention.
