India has the world's third-largest Muslim community in absolute terms, estimated at approximately 14.2 percent of the population per the 2011 census, numbering roughly 200 million people, with figures projected substantially higher in the 2024 update from independent demographic research. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school, with a substantial Twelver Shia minority of roughly 10 to 15 percent of Indian Muslims, smaller Ismaili (including Bohra) and Ahmadiyya communities, and a deeply rooted Sufi tradition with the major Chishti, Qadiri, Naqshbandi, and Suhrawardi orders. India is home to many of the most important monuments of Indo-Islamic civilization, including the Jama Masjid of Delhi (built 1656 under Shah Jahan), the Taj Mahal at Agra, the Qutub Minar complex, and the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer (one of the most visited Sufi shrines in the world). The Darul Uloom Deoband (founded 1866) and Nadwatul Ulama at Lucknow are major scholarly centers. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is a principal community body. eSalah uses the Karachi method. India is flagged for §8 review given contemporary tensions affecting the community.
